You can see that the guys define plenty of variables, just to be sure. It seems that there is no consensus about that. The length of each side of the squares on the chessboard should be about 1.25–1.3 times the diameter of the base of the king, or 2 to 2.5 inches (51 to 64 mm). This helps in blitz games as the speed of movement doesn't offer enough time or precision in dropping the pieces onto the intended squares. It makes the pieces bottom-heavy and keeps them from toppling easily (a well-weighted piece should come upright even if tilted 60 degrees off vertical axis). This is done by adding weights such as iron studs or lead blocks at the bottom and felted. The pieces should be well balanced such that their center of gravity is closer to the board. The size of the other pieces should be in proportion to the king. The diameter of the king should be 40–50% of its height. A height of about 3.75 to 4 inches (95 to 102 mm) is preferred by most players. United States Chess Federation rules call for a king height between 3.375 to 4.5 inches (85.7 to 114.3 mm). The height of the king should be between 3.35 to 4.13 inches (85 to 105 mm). Plastic white pieces are made of white or off-white plastic, and plastic black pieces are made of black or red plastic. The knights in wooden sets are usually hand-carved, accounting for half the cost of the set. Sometimes they are made of boxwood and stained or painted black, brown, or red. Black wooden pieces are made of a dark wood such as rosewood, ebony, red sandalwood, African Padauk wood ( African padauk which is similar to red sandalwood and is marketed as Bud Rosewood or Blood Red Rosewood) or walnut. Wooden White chess pieces are normally made of a light wood, boxwood, or sometimes maple. The first Staunton style sets were made in 1849 by Jaques of London (also known as John Jaques of London and Jaques and Son of London) ( Just & Burg 2003:225) harvcol error: no target: CITEREFJustBurg2003 ( help). Chess sets are available in a variety of designs, the most known being the Staunton design, named after Howard Staunton, a 19th-century English chess player, and designed by Nathaniel Cooke. For example, a set of pieces designed for a chessboard with 2.25 inches (57 mm) squares typically have a king around 3.75 inches (95 mm) tall. Ĭhess pieces used for play are usually figurines that are taller than they are wide. Some works of art are designs of chess sets, such as the modernist chess set by chess enthusiast and dadaist Man Ray, that is on display in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Themed designs are generally intended for display purposes rather than actual play ( Hooper & Whyld 1992:76) harvcol error: no target: CITEREFHooperWhyld1992 ( help). The variety of designs available is broad, from small cosmetic changes to highly abstract representations, to themed designs such as those that emulate the drawings from the works of Lewis Carroll, or modern treatments such as Star Trek or The Simpsons. Trane oil furnace poolmaster swimming pool floating pinterest zitobox ftp wallet dat pfizer ipo root beer barrel candy ingredients federal supreme court judge salary hf active antenna asus geforce rtx 3080 tuf While the red plank is completely survivable, it can be very frustrating to have Boson X randomly play keep away with the blue planks needed to bring that particular experiment to a successful ending. One of them will randomly lead to a blue plank that will help you energize your little particle man, the other one will just lead to a red plank that will try to cave out from underneath you the second you touch it. The catch is, with as fast as the game goes – and the amount of dying you’re going to be doing – it’s going to take a good long while to memorize precisely what happens in each segment.Īn extra special honor – all on it’s own – perhaps needs to go to one of stage four’s level chunks, which forces you to pick one of two paths before the rest of the chunk has formed yet. The saving grace here – making this tolerable at all – is that the contents of Boson X’s stages aren’t completely randomized, instead randomly drawing from a finite list of pre-made chunks. Some of the unique gimmicks that each level features are downright maddening, such as how stage three’s planks spin around violently before coming to a stop mere inches in front of your face. When you add in the fact that Boson X’s pre-complete charge speed is already extremely fast, the best difficulty comparison I can make would be to liken this game to Super Hexagon. Outside of the first two stages, which are relatively on the easy side, the remaining four levels are filled to the brim with gimmicks – none of which are covered in the tutorial – designed to extract from your body every last ounce of frustration imaginable. If it wasn’t already immediately obvious from the fact that this game includes jumping mechanics reminiscent of Castlevania, then let me spell it out for you all directly: Boson X is a colossally hard game. During this point you can see how much longer you can stay alive – trying to gather as much extra energy as possible – for bragging rights on the GameCenter leader boards, or at least against your friends. It should be pointed out that once you achieve critical energy mass you don’t actually explode immediately, the stage instead begins going much faster and the colors of everything changes. How far the leap goes will be determined by how long you hold down on the screen, and once a jump is initiated – or ended – there is absolutely nothing that can be done to modify what has already been locked in.īy successfully finding the elusive particle at the end of a level you will unlock further experiments to conduct, all of which will eventually bring you one step closer to your ultimate goal: the X-Boson. The side of the screen you tap will cause the entire playing field to rotate one full click in that direction, and tapping both sides simultaneously will cause the pint sized man to leap straight forward with no rotation. The controls keep things simple enough, with the player either tapping the left or right hand side of the screen – or sometimes both sides simultaneously – in order to make the little scientist leap for his life. Furthermore – and certainly not making things any easier – he’s also going to go up like a roman candle should he ever miss a jump, which is definitely going to happen quite a lot. The catch is that the second our scientist slams into anything, even if that means only barely nicking the edge of the platform he was attempting to land on, he is going to explode into a shower of particles. His goal is to run along – picking up energy from accelerator planks – until he can reach critical mass and discover theoretical particles upon detonation, such as the ever elusive X-Boson. In order to let people everywhere in on any facts the song left out, Ian MacLarty has decided to chronicle all of Particle Man’s important adventures in an endless runner titled Boson X ( out now, $1.99). Bosch idos not dispensing fabric softener. There was a song by the band They Might Be Giants that once proclaimed, “ Particle Man, Particle Man / Doing the Things a Particle Can / What’s he like? It’s not important / ParticleMan.” Turns out that we finally know precisely what particle man looks like, and – oddly enough – he apparently looks exactly like a human scientist running down long corridors (or Plucky Duck, it all depends on who you ask). Consider the lines in the Command Window in the screen-shot below: Once you've found the solution you can fix your code. If you do this, then press F5 and see no errors, all is well. You can also re-assign variables from the Command Window. Otherwise, we need to take this approach one step further. If that's the case then you simply correct the code and pretend it never happened. You will still see the error though! This is because fld is still undefined.Īt this point you may well have that eureka moment and see the problem straight-away. To do this you can either close the debugger or press F5. Let's allow the code continue running and we can think this over. For i1 and i2 in this example you can see it contains the strings "12" and "56" but it tells us the variable called "fld" is undefined! Here lies our problem: The command window will return the value it associates with that variable on the line below. In the shot below you can see that, one by one I've typed in the names of the variables in my function to test their values. To use the Command Window to check a variable's value you simply type in its name and press enter. Launch it from the View menu of the debugger or by clicking the button on the very right-hand-side of the toolbar. From this little window you can easily check and re-assign values (at "run-time") to any of the variables that have been defined. To do this we can use the Command Window. So, what do we do now we've paused it? Well, we need to find out exactly what it is that's undefined. You shouldn't worry too much about using it anyhow as it's most likely that you will only ever use it in development phase. Note: Browsers other than Internet Explorer will simply ignore this debugger keyword. This is what has happened in the above screen-shot. When Internet Explorer encounters this line it stops executing the script and launches the debugger. This is a simple case of adding the "debugger" keyword to your code, just before the line causing the error, as in the following example: To do this we want to halt the code before the error and do some investigation. Now that we know where the error is we can delve deeper to see what actually caused it. You know the exact line where the error occurred. If you click Yes the Script Debugger window will open and take you to the line of code that is causing problems. With Script Debugger installed, relaunch the browser and press the button again, you will see the same error message but a different dialog box, as below: Download and install a copy of Script Debugger before you carry on. Microsoft give it away for free and you can get it here. The first essential step in debugging your code is getting your hands on a debugger. Knowing how to debug effectively is something you either have or you have to pick up over the years and is well beyond the scope of this article. It's an article to describe the practice of debugging. This article isn't a lesson in the theory of debugging. You might think I've spoilt the fun of describing how we go about finding the error. JavaScript looks for an object called "total" on the form and can't find it. This is the cause of my "undefined" error. In this example I have called my field "Total" and refered to is as "frm.total" in the code. For those who can't, the most valuable lesson to learn about JavaScript is that it's case-sensitive and this is the cause of endless errors. All it has to do is add the values in the first two fields and place the sum in the third:Ĭan you see my error already? Most of you probably can. Now look at the code I wrote for the onclick event of the button. Take the form below, used for adding two numbers, as an example. Sometimes things are a lot more obscure but I will keep it simple here. Most JavaScript errors turn out to be really simple mistakes. This article aims to describe a way of doing so. It wastes too much time! We need to find the error fast. Eventually, if you're lucky, you'll discover what was causing the problem. You can use these prompts to tell us the values of certain variables as the code progresses. So what do we do at this point? I sometimes find myself adding alert() boxes at strategic points in the code. The line number includes all lines of JavaScript that happen to be included, as well as blank lines and whatnot. It does provide the line number that the error happened on but trying to find this actual line is not always as easy as you might think. After a while you start to get to know what each one might mean, but for the novice this is all but meaningless. The error message tells us almost nothing. It's not necessarily that it's any harder than the other languages to debug, it's just that Internet Explorer doesn't really help us out. Of all the languages we use on a daily basis as Domino Developers JavaScript has to be the trickiest of them all to debug. Debugging JavaScript in Your Applications 13 January 2004 Another strategy is to force your ideology on them, changing them into an empire with ethics more like your own who can become an ally. Try Stellaris then vassalizing your opponents is a great strategy (even more so now that they have fixed a few things). Furthermore, the AI should always accept this offer if they can see they have no chance at defeating you in a war. > What these games really need is a diplomatic option for you to demand they surrender to you completely and become a client/puppet of your empire. What these games really need is a diplomatic option for you to demand they surrender to you completely and become a client/puppet of your empire. It can then feel very frustrating that you're so far ahead but must still go through the whole song and dance to finish the game. I agree with you that the number of choices you need to make in the late game is overwhelming, and many of these choices are trivial, but there's an additional problem: you are often so far ahead of the computer AI opponents that it feels like you'd have to make some huge mistakes to give them any hope at all. I automate my bases/cities/planets with all of the available automation options and then try to wrap things up as quickly as I can but it always takes longer than it should. Every single time I get bogged down in the late game. I've played Civ 1-5, Alpha Centauri, Master of Orion 2, Master of Magic all quite extensively. I usually lose interest at this point but enjoy the early game. This came to mind because I've been thinking about doing something like this in a (totally unrelated) piece of software I'm designing in my head. I don't know, I haven't played any games of this kind for. Or maybe it doesn't even need to be invented maybe they are already bundled together in sub- and sub-sub-concepts in some games? But perhaps something similar could be set by inventing hierarchical levels for more abstract concepts like technological / economic / military / research strategies. If later you want to micromanage some specific city or country, just uncheck the box only for that one, and let all the other cities in the country / countries on the planet keep following the settings of their parent level. So you adjust all the settings for each, say, city in the first few rounds then, when you have several countries, you click that box in each of the cities and from then on set it just for each country later, click it in each country and just set for whole planets. A simple "inherit from parent" checkbox for each settings dialog? |
